Philosophy
Humanities Prep seeks to provide all students with a philosophical and practical education based on creative inquiry, self-reflection, and individual productivity. Depth of knowledge is emphasized over breadth, and small classes meet for longer periods to encourage investigation and cooperative learning. Courses are thematic, and the school's curriculum and pedagogy are designed to prepare students for the rigors of college work. In the classroom, student projects come to life in multiple drafts, supporting the roles of student as worker and teacher as coach.

Achievements
100 percent of Humanities Prep's 2002 and 2003 graduates were accepted to four-year colleges, and the school's graduation rates were substantially higher than the New York City averages for the 2002 and 2003 cohorts.

Challenges
Humanities Prep works hard to meet its own priorities for individual student investigation and productivity while also maintaining a culture of participatory leadership and cooperative learning. The school is also charged with adequately preparing its students for New York's State Regents examinations, assessments which run counter to Humanities Prep's general academic philosophy.
