Humanities Preparatory Academy
Community Connections

Philosophy Because students from every New York City borough elect to attend, Humanities Prep is not a traditional "neighborhood school" for the majority of its students. Over time, however, a wide community has developed, a virtual neighborhood that has supported and nurtured the school. Professional development funds, grants, positions and programs at Humanities Prep actively integrate these parents and community partners as valuable formative forces. The school's Leadership Team is convened monthly, offering parents oversight and advisory roles. And parents and teachers also collaborate on strategies to improve student learning, with student work and performance data regularly made public for community critique and celebration.
Achievements Collaborations with respected institutions such as New York University, the YMCA, iMentor, City Kids Leadership Training, and Morgan Lewis Law Firm have greatly enhanced Humanities Prep's curricular offerings without making extra demands of teachers. And via multi-year arts and technology grants, the school has partnered with the Guggenheim Museum, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kitchen Gallery, and Colombia University. Humanities Prep is also committed to the needs and expectations of its families, with a parent coordinator, social worker, and guidance counselor on full time staff.
Challenges Overseeing a wide variety of student internships and community projects, as well as managing an array of partnerships with city organizations, tests the capacity of Humanities Prep.
