Urban Academy Laboratory High School

Description: Urban Academy is a small New York City public high school which serves a diverse population; classes at the school are heterogeneous and multi-aged. Urban Academy's student population is multicultural and multiracial; the school serves students from all economic levels and reflects the general NYC population.

Mission: Urban Academy's approach to education assumes that the more deeply invested students are in their own learning, the more successful they will be as learners. For Urban Academy, a focus on inquiry, on critical thinking and problem-solving is grounded in the belief that reading, debate, writing, reflection and respect for the ideas of others are essential aspects of learning. Thus the school's focus on active learning, on a consideration of the controversial and the formulation and analysis of authentic questions form the basis of its views regarding curriculum process and content.
